Onion Poultice - Chest

The unique properties of Onions and their ability to 'Draw' things out makes them a great go to remedy

for inflammation and congestion in the upper body.

When the cold sets in and your cough and chest congestion is getting you down - you may like to give this

a go.  It is safe for both Adults and Children.

  • Take one Onion and slice into rings.

  • Take 1 or 2 full Onion rings and place them on the soles of your feet.

  • Place a bag on each foot (or even wrap in cling film) and then put a sock on to keep the bag in place.

Go to bed with these Onion bags on your feet. There is debate that the pores will not 'draw' anything, but since our Grandma's time putting things on the soles of your feet to aid healing has been passed down through the generations.  You certainly have nothing to lose, although you may have smelly feet !!

This is a great remedy for children who have a cough or chest congestion.  If your little ones go to sleep

and they are no longer coughing and they are sleeping this would be a good sign they are not in pain.

JUST REMEMBER TO USE COMMON SENSE.  IF IN DOUBT GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Onion - Ear Ache
cut-eating-food-37912 (1).jpg

In Barbara's own words...if you have taken your child or yourself to the Doctor and been on the antibiotics and they haven't worked maybe try this.  Her own child had been teething and had ear ache but ended up with 4 courses of antibiotics before she found this old remedy from a neighbor who was in her 80's.   AGAIN IF IN DOUBT CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST.

Take an Onion with the skin on and cut it in half so you see the circular rings.

Either steam it or bake it in the oven with the skin on. Boiling it will take away the healing properties.

When the Onion has cooled enough to not burn place it over the ear.

Put on a Beany Hat, or wrap the head with a bandage to hold the Onion over the ear.

If your child is in pain and distressed and you do this and they stop crying it is a pretty good sign they are getting relief.

They can lie down or go to bed with the Onion.  Leave in place for a couple of hours.

Do this again if needed.  The body will tell you if you need to keep doing it, and when to stop.

If you are caught out and don't have any Cough Syrup you could give this a go.

Chop up an Onion into small pieces.

Add to a jar, about the size of a Jam Jar

Cover the top of the Onion with Honey.

Choose a good thick Honey, Manuka if you can afford it.

Add another layer of Onion

Add another layer of Honey.

Seal the Jar and put aside.

Within 24 hours the Honey will become liquid.
