Power of the Poultice

The definition of a poultice is "a soft, moist mass of material, applied to the body to relieve soreness and inflammation and kept in place with a cloth".

The choice of material used will depend on the condition being treated.

Here are 4 go to Poultices for Home remedies that I have shared from Barbara O'Neill - Natural Doctor.  She has used these remedies many times with great success.

What inspired me was seeing her use these remedies with children with great success and they cause no pain or discomfort and make our precious babies feel special.  Please, please, if they

are clearly not working go to the Doctor.

You can use more than one. Mix them up if you are not sure which one is best.

NB:  Always use your common sense.

If your home remedy is not working seek medical advice.

Barbara's key "Go To"  poultice's are:

Onion/Garlic - for chest infections, inflammation in the chest and airways.

This has been used in cases of chest infection, bronchitis, and upper respiratory conditions.

Potato - to draw infection from wounds, open cuts, scratches, punctures to the skin.

When the wound has healed over with infection inside the Potato poultice will 'draw' the infection out of the body.

Ginger - to help ease inflammatory conditions like arthritis, bursitis, inflamed injuries.

Castor Oil - a deeply penetrating drawing agent.  Has been used to promote healing, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, especially the lymphatic system, and many other internal conditions.

Onion/Garlic Poultice.

When there is chest congestion, these are used on the feet.

  • Onion can be grated, or cut into a thin slice and placed directly on both feet.

  • Put a plastic bag, or gauze, or woolen cloth over the Onion and then put on a sock.

Go to bed for the night.

  • Garlic - DO NOT PUT DIRECTLY ON THE SKIN.

  • Wrap the Garlic in a piece of muslin, gauze.

  • Place on the sole of the foot and put on your sock, then your shoe.

  • You can walk around on this all day and it will slowly release the juice from the

  • Garlic.  Great one for children.

By the end of the day when you take it off there will be no juice left in the slice.

Potato Poultice.

The humble Potato has been used for hundreds of years as an effective means of drawing out infection and relieving inflammation.  Depending on the infection it will usually draw it out between 1 - 3 days.

My own personal experience was a crush injury that formed a scab with an infection under the scab. The skin was red and inflamed around the wound and quite painful.  I healed the wound in 2 days and have no major scarring.

  • Wash your Potato and then grate it.

  • Place the grated Potato on the wound.

  • Cover with gauze/woolen cloth or a square of glad wrap.

  • Wrap a bandage over the area to secure the poultice to the affected area.

  • Leave in place overnight, or for 8 hours.

  • Remove, and replace with new Potato if required.

Ginger Poultice.

Apply in the same way as a Potato Poultice.

  • Wash, and peal the Ginger

  • Grate enough to cover the affected area

  • Cover with a gauze, woolen cloth or Glad wrap.

  • Wrap a bandage over the area to secure the poultice to the affected area.

  • Leave in place overnight, or for 8 hours.

  • Remove, and replace with new Ginger if required.

Castor Oil Poultice.

The Castor Oil Poultice is a powerful drawing agent.

Do you own research, there are people who swear by this amazing Oil for many ailments of the body including cancer, constipation, inflammation and much more.

You may need something like a ladies sanitary pad, or a heavy wad of Callico.

  • Put Castor Oil on the pad and let it seep in - you may need to leave it for 10 minutes

       to soak into the cloth.

  • Apply to the area you are trying to heal and wrap in place with a stretch bandage.

  • Leave overnight.  Replace with a new poultice.

I have heard of ladies putting a Castor Oil poultice in the bra and leaving it there - for you 'know what'.  Certainly have nothing to lose from trying these ancient ways of healing the body.

There are other herbs that can be made into poultices.  This is just a small sample of what is possible.  Let me know if you find other ones that work for you.
